Valheim Console Commands and Cheats: Guide for 1.0

Last updated 9 October 2026. Checked against Valheim 1.0 and patch 1.0.17, using Iron Gate's patch notes and the commands community guides agree on. The in-game help command always shows the full current list.

How to open the Valheim console

Enable it. Iron Gate made the developer console opt-in in patch 0.221.4 ("Call to Arms"): there is an option in the settings menu to switch it on. The -console launch argument still works and overrides the setting. On Steam you add it under Properties, then General, then Launch Options.
Open it in game with F5 (on a laptop keyboard that may be Fn + F5). A prompt appears at the top left.
Unlock cheats by typing devcommands and pressing Enter. Commands such as god, ghost and spawn only work after that. Type it again to switch them off.

What cheating does to your game in 1.0

The Valheim 1.0 patch notes changed how cheats are tracked:

Items you create with cheat commands are marked as "cheated" when you look at them in your inventory.
From patch 1.0.14, cheated stackable items no longer stack with normal items, so a normal stack can't be turned into a cheated one by accident.
Most cheat commands lock achievements. Hotfix 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 added a command to opt back in, yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway. The notes list it as one of the Steam-specific fixes.

So decide before you start. If you only want to save a bad run or build a showpiece, cheats are fine. If you care about achievements, plan around them.

Valheim cheat commands

All of these need devcommands first. Values in square brackets are optional.

Player and character

god Toggles God mode, so you can't die.

ghost Toggles ghost mode: enemies ignore you.

heal Restores your health.

nocost Building and crafting cost nothing.

debugmode Creative-style mode: fly and build without needing a workbench.

fly Toggles flight.

freefly Detached camera for screenshots.

puke Clears the food you have eaten.

raiseskill [skill] [amount] Raises a skill by the amount you give.

resetskill [skill] Resets a skill. Since patch 0.219.13 it also accepts all.

resetcharacter Resets your character. Back up the character first.

Items and creatures

Command What it does

spawn [id] [amount] [level] Spawns an item or creature by its internal ID. For example spawn Wood 10 drops 10 wood next to you.

tame Tames nearby tameable creatures.

killall Kills nearby creatures, tamed ones included.

removedrops Removes dropped items nearby, handy after killall.

Internal IDs are not always the name you see in the inventory, so if spawn says it can't find something, check the spelling in an item ID list.

World, time and weather

pos Shows your current coordinates.

goto [x] [z] Teleports you to coordinates.

exploremap Reveals the whole map.

resetmap Hides the map again.

tod [0-1] Sets the time of day (0.5 is noon). Use -1 to go back to the normal cycle.

env [name] Forces a weather type.

resetenv Returns the weather to normal.

event [name] Starts a named raid or event.

stopevent Stops the current event.

randomevent Starts a random event.

save Forces a save.

New developer commands in 1.0

The 1.0 patch notes list these new dev commands and say each one is described in the console's help output: confirmcheats, achievements, getstat, haslocation, snow, updatecover, cinematic, cinematicsleep, inventorysize, inventoryclean, clearpopups, height, pevents, repairall, resetbuildui, biomeinfo, altbiomes, findbiome and findbiometp. Patch 1.0.14 moved pevents behind the devcommands toggle too. We don't describe them here because the notes don't, and a wrong description is worse than none: use help in game.

There is also sortcraft, added in patch 0.219.13, which sorts crafting lists by name, type, weight, count or original order.

Valheim server admin commands

On a dedicated server, the admin commands are the ones to know. You need to be on the admin list first: join the server, press F2 to see the player list, copy your player ID, stop the server and add the ID to adminlist.txt (one ID per line), then start it again. Then use these in the F5 console:

Tips for using cheats safely

Back up your world and character first. Commands like resetcharacter, resetskill all and killall can't be undone.
Use killall with care. It also kills your tamed animals.
Don't spawn what you haven't earned if you want the game to stay interesting. Our guide to Valheim bosses and weapons covers beating the fights properly.
Tell your group. Cheated items are marked in the inventory in 1.0, so nobody is fooled for long.
